Joseph competed in the Peach Jam, the Nike circuit’s year-end championship tournament, as a grassroots athlete with Expressions Elite. He was rated as a top-130 player in his class by most online scouting organisations, with four stars. Before deciding to commit to the Hurricanes, Joseph had offers from a number of universities, including Providence, the University of Rhode Island, Boston College, Marquette, Penn State, Georgetown, Iowa, and Rutgers.
Joseph’s two seasons at Miami ended with long trips into the NCAA Tournament. As a freshman, he participated in 36 games for an Elite Eight squad; however, the Hurricanes lost to Kansas, the eventual national champion, in a Chicago regional final. Providence recently finished with a 21–14 record and an NIT berth. For the third time since the 2013–14 campaign, the Friars failed to make the anticipated March Madness field when Bryce Hopkins suffered a left knee injury in early January. Coach Kim English of Providence discussed the value of bringing in winning players in a late-night podcast interview with The Field of 68, among other things.
“You can see that they are willing to put in the work necessary to succeed,” English remarked. “It’s fantastic to have a winning player—someone who has experienced winning culture.” However, there are a plethora of diverse players available.
Joseph joins a backcourt for the Friars that is expected to include Justyn Fernandez, Corey Floyd Jr., and Jayden Pierre. Ryan Mela, an incoming freshman, gives further depth to the perimeter shooting and Rich Barron returns to the wing position. Garwey Dual has registered on the transfer portal, while Devin Carter, who had an incredible junior season, announced his intention to pursue the NBA Draft. As a result, Providence will be substituting a total of 54 minutes a game in those two positions.
Over the past few weeks, the names of several prospects have appeared with the Friars, including Joseph. Similar characteristics apply to Temple guard Hysier Miller, who has one more year of eligibility and some necessary on-court experience. Sam Alexis, a sophomore forward from Chattanooga who can score in the paint and rebound, is also a finalist for Providence.
This week, Joseph and Gavin Griffiths, the wing for Rutgers, paid unofficial trips to the university. Guard PJ Haggerty of Tulsa, who chose Memphis over offers from Providence, Texas, and Kansas State, was a squandered opportunity for the Friars. After spending a redshirt year at TCU, Haggerty emerged as the American Athletic Conference’s Rookie of the Year, making his debut with the Golden Hurricane.
