Providence Friars guard transfers to Butler Bulldogs.

Garwey Dual, a Providence transfer guard, might land in a variety of positions.

Garwey Dual, a former Providence Friars player, is navigating the 2024 NBA draft process, trying to become a one-and-done after a lackluster first year under coach Kim English.

Dual recommitted to Providence after coach Ed Cooley left for Georgetown, but the 6-foot-5 guard averaged only 3.3 points, 1.9 assists, and 1.3 rebounds in 18.5 minutes per game with the Friars, shooting 40% from two and 25% from three.

Still, Dual has an incredibly big wingspan (7 feet) and demonstrated why he was such a sought-after recruit out of high school.

In an NBA combine scrimmage on Saturday, he scored 11 points, stole four, and assisted three times. Dual confessed he has not concentrated on the transfer site because he is still completely absorbed in the NBA draft process. However, if he does not receive the desired reply from the NBA, he intends to return to college and seek a program that will allow him to play point guard.

The point guard market has cleared out dramatically in the last week or so, with AJ Hoggard joining Vanderbilt as the most recent lead guard to commit.

Dual is now among the highest upside guards available in the portal, and below are five programs that could use a point guard, starting with a fellow Big East school:

Butler Bulldogs
Dual is a native of Houston, but he played some high school ball in Carmel, Indiana, and a move to Butler could allow him to start at point guard while staying in the Big East.
Thad Matta’s team had guards Posh Alexander (Dayton) and DJ Davis (Washington) depart via the portal, and the only guard replacement so far is Tulane’s Kolby King who is more of an off guard than a true point guard.
