“Ready to Leave” Detroit Lions’ top player issues a clear statement regarding his contract extension.

Key The Detroit Lions’ free-agency addition receives high accolades from NFL executives.

After reaching the NFC Championship Game for the first time since 1992, the Detroit Lions made several offseason moves to help them win in 2024. While the results from those moves won’t come for months, one free-agency signing in particular generated strong praise in the NFL.

Detroit recognized after its NFC title loss to the San Francisco 49ers that its defense needed to be improved. So, with ample cap space, the Lions signed cornerback Amik Robertson, edge rusher Marcus Davenport, defensive tackle D.J. Reader and acquired cornerback Carlton Davis III.

All three players are expected to contribute significantly to the Lions’ defence in 2024. While none of the additions would necessarily impact Detroit’s plans for its top NFL Draft picks, one NFL executive is particularly excited with Reader’s addition.

An anonymous NFL insider told Mike Sando of The Athletic that even though Reader was coming off an injury, his hiring was a significant gain for the Lions’ front office.

While Reader has never made a Pro Bowl in his NFL career, the former fifth-round choice in the 2016 NFL Draft is well-liked throughout the league. Unfortunately, he tore his quadriceps tendon in Week 15 against the Minnesota Vikings.
