Birmingham, Alabama (WBRC) – Bo Scarbrough, a former Alabama Crimson Tide great running back and two-time USFL champion with the Birmingham Stallions, announced his retirement Saturday morning, according to the UFL and Scarbrough.
“I want to thank you guys for pushing me to be the better athlete, better player, all around the world, as a person and as a man,” Scarbrough stated in his announcement. “With that said, I am retiring from football. We have something termed the ‘fourth quarter.’ Discipline, work, tenacity, pride, and, most importantly, commitment. If you want to play this game, you must be committed to doing so. If you aren’t committed, it won’t work. So, for my heart, it was time. It’s difficult for me to walk away from this game, but you know, I’m walking away with my head held high, knowing that I’ve done some excellent things”
Scarbrough, who is a native of Eutaw, Alabama, played for the Alabama Crimson Tide under former HC Nick Saban from 2014-2017. As a redshirt freshman in 2015, Scarbrough was part of a stout RB group in Tuscaloosa that helped the Tide win the 2015 CFP championship, playing alongside Kenyan Drake, Damien Harris, and 2015 Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry.
As a sophomore in 2016, Scarbrough was part of another standout RB room in Tuscaloosa playing alongside Damien Harris and freshman RB Josh Jacobs. During the 2016 season, Scarbrough appeared in 13 games for the Tide, carrying the ball 125 times for 812 yards, and scored 11 touchdowns. In the postseason, Scarbrough was named as the Peach Bowl Offensive MVP after rushing for a Crimson Tide bowl game record 180 yards that included two touchdowns.
During his final season in Tuscaloosa, Scarbrough was a key member of a loaded running back group that included Damien Harris, Josh Jacobs, and rookie Najee Harris. Scarbrough ran the ball 124 times for 596 yards and eight touchdowns in 2017, helping the Crimson Tide win the CFP national championship.
Scarbrough was selected in the seventh round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. Scarbrough spent his NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys, Jacksonville Jaguars, Seattle Seahawks, Detroit Lions, and Las Vegas Raiders between 2018 and 2021.
During the halfway point of the 2022 USFL season, Scarbrough signed with the Birmingham Stallions. Scarbrough immediately took over the starting RB position, and helped lead the Stallions to a 2022 USFL championship. In the championship game, he carried the ball 13 times for 135 yards and one touchdown.
