Sad News From Dallas Cowboys Today…..

The Dallas Cowboys were considered by many as legitimate Super Bowl contenders and QB Dak Prescott was a major reason for their 2023 success.

Despite the early playoff loss, Prescott is coming off his best NFL seasons and the chemistry on offense between Mike McCarthy calling plays, the starting signal caller and the emergence of CeeDee Lamb cementing himself as a true No. 1 WR has been refreshing to see.

While history has shown the Dallas Cowboys and Prescott choke in the postseason, reaching the playoffs five of the last seven seasons but never making it past the Divisional Round to the NFC Championship game, Jerry Jones and company have stuck by their QB in past situations.

Dak Prescott finished the 2023 season ranked in the top five in several major categories for NFL QBs and was the frontrunner for MVP for most of the year.  He heads into Sunday’s critical Wilcard Round matchup against the Green Bay Packers with 4,516 yards (3rd), 36 touchdowns (1st), 9 interceptions and a QB rating of 72.5 (2nd).

Now Jerry Jones and the Cowboys brass find themselves in an all-too familiar position. With Prescott nearing the end of his last major contract extension, Dallas has to either sign him to a new long-term deal to help free cap space for 2024, or release him after June 1 which would save almost $30 million on next year’s cap number but the team would lose a massive chunk of change in dead money owed to the one-time hopeful franchise QB.

The salary cap site OverTheCap.com, writer Jason Fitzgerald also raised the notion of cutting Prescott, and wrote, “If for some crazy reason the Cowboys wanted to cut Dak Prescott they could but it would be costly. He would need to be released before the roster bonus is due and even then the Cowboys would need to account for $61.915 million in salary cap charges. … My guess is Dallas would opt to June 1 Prescott if for any reason it came down to this.

In a way, the Cowboys have painted themselves into a corner when it comes to Dak Prescott.. He has a no-trade clause in his deal, so he can’t necessarily be dealt. They owe him $59 million in 2024, which gives him a lot of leverage in negotiations—at worst, he can walk away from the table and the Cowboys will have to pay him that money. Again, a cut is a longshot here.

There’s really no other logical other option other than to give him a contract extension sooner rather than later, in a move to free up his massive cap hit for 2024.  Prescott is set to earn roughly $57 million per year and it’s likely Dallas pays him according to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport.

The Dallas Cowboys have a real actual deadline for Dak Prescott as they begin work on his contract extension that should make him once again one of the highest paid quarterbacks in the NFL,” Rapoport reported on Super Bowl Sunday.

“He carries an almost $60 million cap number next season and the Cowboys are going to want to go into free agency, they are going to want to have maneuverability, wanting to be able to sign guys, the only way to do that is to lower that cap number. That’s why the expectation is the Cowboys will do a deal, in some form or fashion with Prescott before free agency, he can essentially not be franchise tagged after the season entering the final year of his deal. So a deal basically must be done for Dallas.”

It’s clear the Cowboys will go as far as Prescott takes them at this point.
