Sad news: Former Providence Friar legend Player died at the age of 47 in Florida.

Providence, Rhode Island – Pierce Norton ’09, a former Friar men’s hockey player, passed suddenly on January 11 at the age of 38.

“The Providence College community is saddened by the news of Pierce’s passing,” Providence College Athletic Director Steve Napolillo stated. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. They will always be a member of the Friar community.”

Norton, who was picked in the ninth round by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2004, played in 135 games for Providence College and had 59 points. Norton had career highs in goals ten, assists fourteen, and points twenty-four during his junior season in 2007-08.

A native of South Boston, Mass., Norton was an active-duty officer with the Boston Police Department since 2013. He had been serving on the department’s Citywide Bicycle Unit since 2018. Norton received numerous commendations for his dedicated service during his career, including praise for his response to quality of life concerns.
