Cherry Star, wife of late legendary quarterback Bart Starr, passes away at the age of 89.
The Green Bay Packers have a rich history and tradition that goes back over a century. One of the most researched, revered, and honored periods in their history is the Vince Lombardi era, which spanned from 1959 to 1967. Of course, Hall of Fame quarterback Bart Starr was the Packers’ undisputed field captain at the time.
Much has been and will be written about Starr’s legacy and excellence. However, what he did to give back to the community contributed to his popularity among Packers fans for almost 60 years. His wife, Cherry Starr, was an important part of that effort.

The great Packers quarterback died on May 26, 2019. His wife, Cherry, died on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, according to reports. She was 89 years old. Bart and Cherry married in 1954, while the Hall of Fame quarterback was still attending college at the University of Alabama. They had to elope and keep their marriage a secret because at the time, colleges frequently revoked scholarships for married athletes.

Bart and Cherry Starr had an impact beyond the Green Bay Packers.
In 1965, Bart and Cherry co-founded the Rawhide Boys Ranch in New London, Wisconsin. The charity is dedicated to assisting at-risk boys across Wisconsin. Starr famously gave the Corvette he won for winning MVP in Super Bowl II to the ranch.
In 1971, Bart and Cherry helped establish the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation, which raises funding for cancer research. Later, they established the Starr Children’s Fund under the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation to support pediatric cancer research and treatment.
