Overall, as the NBA Draft draws closer, the San Antonio Spurs have been linked to Providence guard Devin Carter.
Almost every NBA mock draft or forecast shows the San Antonio Spurs taking at least one of their top 10 picks in the 2024 draft to boost their backcourt.
The Spurs’ weakest position is point guard, where they have been linked to defensive-minded Stephon Castle, offensive threat Rob Dillingham, and pass-first Nikola Topic.
An additional name has been mentioned. Devin Carter, a third-year Providence player and Big East Player of the Year, is rising up the draft boards.
In his third NCAA season, his second with the Friars, he averaged 19.7 points, 3.6 assists, 1.8 steals, and shot 37.7 percent from three. If he can replicate those numbers at the NBA level, he is the exact player the Spurs are looking for.
According to Jonathan Givony of ESPN, the Spurs and Memphis Grizzlies, who hold the ninth pick, are high on Carter going in the top ten. Luckily for San Antonio, they have two picks before Memphis gets to make a selection, so the Spurs can take him (or trade him!) if they believe in the hype.
Providence’s Devin Carter is in the midst of an outstanding month that has him knocking on the door of the draft lottery. He measured and tested well in Chicago, and had one of the best pro day showings we saw in Los Angeles.
Carter’s rebounding and strength is reminiscent of Russell Westbrook, although there are doubts about whether that will translate to the NBA level. He is a solid shooter and strong defender, so as a rookie, he will get to work out the kinks behind Victor Wembanyama and Devin Vassell, who will continue to carry the offense next season.
If the Spurs go all-in on a young backcourt, pairing him with a true point guard might encourage him to focus on becoming a defensive standout who offers outside shooting. His 6-2 measurements are less than ideal but is complimented well with his 6-8 wingspan.
