Kyle Larson and the No. 5 team got furious over the radio following the contact.
The NASCAR Cup Series held its race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sunday. Two drivers with previous issues rubbed fenders once more. Rain was expected at the end of stage two.
Larson and others elected to take just two tires. Stage two winner Denny Hamlin took four tires but he restarted 8th at the start of stage three.
With four fresh tires, Hamlin quickly sliced through the field.
With 94 laps to go, Hamlin worked inside of Larson in a battle for 2nd. He ran him wide and they rubbed doors. Smoke billowed behind them but Hamlin couldn’t complete the pass.
A lap later, Hamlin ran him wide again. More contact and Hamlin finally cleared him for 2nd.
History between Hamlin and Larson
Larson and Hamlin have a history.
Minus contact with the wall, the move at NHMS was near identical to a move Hamlin pulled on Larson last season. The move brought controversy and sparked criticism of Hamlin from other drivers.
Last year at Pocono Raceway, Hamlin ran Larson wide as they battled for the lead. After the contact, Hamlin went on to grab the race win as Larson found the wall.
Heated No. 5 radio
Tyler Monn (#5 Spotter): “He runs you like that every time. Do you know why? Because you let it happen.”
Larson responded, “Shut the f*** up.”
Denny Hamlin comments
“Everyone knows that rain is eminent,” Denny Hamlin told NBC of the race with Larson.
“So, you’re just trying to do everything you can to gain any spot. Everyone knows, if they can just get up front, they can control the pace.”
“We’re all battling, as hard as we can. Cause we all know, it’s just a matter of time [before the rain].”
