PROVIDENCE, RI— The Providence College softball team (20-21-1, 10-11 BIG EAST) will wrap up regular season play this week. On Wednesday, May 1, the Friars will visit Ocean-State rival Brown University (17-21, 9-9 Ivy League) at Glay Field in Providence, Rhode Island. Providence will then travel to Omaha, Nebraska, to finish regular season BIG EAST action against the Creighton Bluejays (31-19, 14-7 BIG EAST). The Friars will play the Bluejays in a three-game series starting on May 4. All games this week will be available to watch on FloSports.
Scouting Providence
The Friars start the week with a 20-21-1 overall record including a 10-11 mark in BIG EAST play. The Friars most recently bested the Georgetown Hoyas in a three-game series, winnings two of the three games. The Friars can clinch a berth in the BIG EAST Softball Championship by matching or surpassing Butlers’ performance at Villanova this weekend.
Hanna Aldrich (Taunton, Mass.), Jacque Harrington (Bedford, N.H.) and Gabriella Lee (Belmont, Calif.) spearhead the Friar offense with 40 hits each on the season. Harrington leads the team in RBI (24), doubles (13), runs (27), triples (two) and home runs (five).
Pitchers Alyssa Twomey (Warwick, R.I.) and Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) have owned the circle for the Friars. These two players helped lead the team (both offensively and defensively) to two wins and a tie this over last week. Twomey appeared in three of the Friars’ five games last week. She clinched the team’s two wins over Georgetown as she owned a 2.77 ERA with 17 strikeouts. Twomey concluded the weekend with 14 strikeouts over 14.2 innings. Grifone finished the week 4-for-7 at the plate while posting a 1.000 slugging percentage, .667 on-base percentage, even bringing home a runner and scoring a run. In the 1-1 tie at Boston University on April 24, Grifone pitched six full innings, striking out seven and holding the Terriers scoreless. Following their performances, Twomey earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week while Grifone was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll (April 29).
SCOUTING BROWN
The Bears enter midweek play against the Friars with an overall record of 17-21, including a 9-9 mark in Ivy League play. Brown recently upset Princeton in two of its three games over the weekend.
Jasmine Hsiao leads the Bears’ offense with a.360 batting average,.518 slugging percentage,.438 on-base percentage, and 41 hits. Dara has a team-high 24 RBI.
Alexis Guevara leads the Bears’ pitching staff with a 2.59 ERA and 89 strikeouts. She’s allowed 123 hits and 48 earned runs.
SCOUTING CREIGHTON
The Bluejays begin this week with a 31-19 overall record, 14-7 in BIG EAST play. Last week, the Bluejays won all four games, including a 7-3 victory against Omaha on April 23 and a three-game sweep of DePaul over the weekend.
Madeline Vejvoda, Cayla Nielsen, and Lily West have started all 50 games and are presently leading the Bluejays’ offense. Vejvoda leads the club in batting average (.356), slugging percentage (.490), on-base percentage (.406), and RBI (28). Nielsen leads the club with 57 hits this season, including 14 doubles. West led Creighton to a series sweep of DePaul, hitting.538 with a home run, double, five RBI, and four runs scored. During the midweek meeting in Omaha, the sophomore went 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. For her efforts on the week, West was named BIG EAST Player of the Week on April 29.
Natalia Puchino commands the circle for the Bluejays with a 22-5 record and a 1.80 ERA. Puchino has pitched 163 innings, faced 573 at-bats and recorded 148 strikeouts. Puchino has conceded 100 hits and 42 earned runs this season.
