Steelers: With Justin Fields’ arrival, Pittsburgh will have to make another key decision.

Justin Fields adds a twist to the Steelers’ intriguing decision on running back Najee Harris.

The Pittsburgh Steelers traded Justin Fields to the Chicago Bears, which sparked excitement. Pittsburgh acquired Fields in exchange for a sixth-round pick (which could be converted into a fourth if Fields plays 51% of games in 2024-25). Fields adds to the Steelers’ key fifth-year option decision for running back Najee Harris.

The Steelers now have two significant fifth-year decisions to make.

Both Justin Fields and Najee Harris are entering their fourth seasons in the NFL. Thus, the two previous first-round picks have a fifth-year contract option that the Steelers can exercise. The specifics of the possibilities make Pittsburgh’s choice more intriguing.

According to Steelers Depot, fifth-year options are divided into tiers depending on playing time and amount of Pro Bowl selections. Harris was a Pro Bowler in his rookie season, but because he was an alternate, it does not count towards the formula.

Both Fields and Harris fell under the playtime category. Fields’ option will be valued $25,664,00, while Harris’ will be $6,790,000. Analysts believe the Steelers would get a great deal with Harris’ option considering his remarkable performance.

On 255 carries in 2023-24, Harris gained 1,035 yards and a career-high eight touchdowns. His numbers were practically equal to those from his 2022-23 season, which came after a Pro Bowl-worthy first year.

Hopefully, Harris can continue his progress in 2024 despite the Steelers’ new changes.

How will the Steelers’ offence look with personnel changes?

Pittsburgh has a new quarterback core in place. The team took up veteran quarterback Russell Wilson from the Denver Broncos to lead the offence. Wilson is a seasoned professional who had a successful year. The greatest question for the Steelers is Justin Fields.

Fields joins Pittsburgh following three seasons with the Bears. He experienced small stat improvement in 2023-24, but despite leading Chicago to a 7-10 record, the team failed to make the playoffs.

Now, Fields has a highly touted, experienced QB to learn from. Hopefully, he can take a jump and become a core part of Pittsburgh’s promising offense.
