Cardiff City, Sunderland’s Championship rivals, have begun legal action against French club Nantes.
Cardiff City filed a complaint against Nantes in a French court on Monday, claiming losses of more than £100 million in connection with Emiliano Sala’s untimely death in an aircraft crash in January 2019.
Following a “in-depth analysis” by a legal expert, Celine Jones, the Welsh club’s lawyer, assessed the cost at 120.2 million euros (£104 million). Nantes has until September 23 to respond, with Jones reporting that the analysis has been submitted to the Nantes Commercial Court in western France.
“We’ll take the time to study these new voluminous documents and figures,” said lawyers Jerome Marsaudon and Louis-Marie Absil for Nantes.
Sala, 28, died in a plane crash on January 21, 2019, along with pilot David Ibbotson. The Argentine striker was on his way from France to South Wales to complete a £15 million deal from Nantes to Cardiff City, a Premier League club.
The Swiss Federal Tribunal ruled that the Court of Arbitration in Sport (CAS) did not have jurisdiction to hear Cardiff City’s damages claim. This means that the Welsh club has decided to follow a different route.
Lawyer Jones said during a hearing last year: “If Sala had been able to play, he would inevitably have scored goals between January and June 2019 and Cardiff would have remained in the Premier League. It would be unrealistic to think that he would not have scored any goals.”
