“I was surprised,” Kyle Larson said after NASCAR penalized him for speeding at Pocono.
Kyle Larson addressed NASCAR’s penalty for speeding in pit lane during the Pocono race on Sunday (July 14). The Hendrick Motorsports driver, along with teammate Chase Elliott and Joe Gibbs Racing’s Ty Gibbs, was relegated to the back of the field in Stage 3, eliminating him from contention for the win.
Kyle Larson discussed this in a post-race interview with Fronstretch, questioning whether he was at fault or if the penalty was a mistake on the part of NASCAR.
“I am not sure yet. I’ll have to speak with, I think, the team. I believe it sounds like Section 7 (of the pit road) is different now than it was in the past. It was a bummer because I didn’t push it. I didn’t push it beyond our limit. I never imagined I’d be speeding. So when they announced on the radio that we would be speeding, I was astonished,” Larson recalled.
He claimed it was an unfortunate situation, even though he wasn’t sure if he would’ve won the race. However, Kyle Larson was certain that without the penalty, he would have finished better than 13th place. And because of that, Chase Elliott has leapfrogged him in the regular season championship battle, something Larson is closely monitoring.
