‘I considered leaving, but you cannot make decisions in the heat of the moment; I couldn’t envision a life without bikes.’ – Marc Márquez
Marc Márquez experienced an extremely difficult spell in his MotoGP career beginning with the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix. A catastrophic injury to his right arm was only the beginning of a series of issues.
Later, the Spaniard experienced another major crash, leaving him with a problem that had previously jeopardized his career: diplopia. After exhibiting signs of recovery, the setbacks continued.
Once recovered from the physical issues, Márquez then encountered another obstacle to return to the top – the poor competitiveness of Honda, with no end in sight.
In a conversation with Audi Spain’s YouTube channel, the eight-time world champion didn’t hide that retirement was an option: ‘I thought about it, but you can’t make any decisions in the heat of the moment’.
One thing is certain, despite the physical problems, Márquez always maintained the craving for the adrenaline of racing, as he recounted: ‘Every time I recovered from an injury, I wanted to get back on the bike, I couldn’t imagine a life without bikes, without adrenaline’.
