Former Oregon Ducks standout Payton Pritchard scores a career-high 38 points for the Boston Celtics.
Payton Pritchard is eager to assist the Boston Celtics capture their record-breaking 18th NBA championship.
The Celtics guard had a career-high 38 points and 12 assists in the Celtics’ 132-122 victory over the Washington Wizards to end the regular season on Sunday.
With the Celtics’ entire starting lineup rested, the former Oregon Ducks and West Linn High School standout took advantage of a rare opportunity. Pritchard made 15 of 21 shots, including three of four from three-point range. He also grabbed nine rebounds, nearly completing a triple-double.
“If it comes, I will accept it. But I received one last year,” Pritchard told reporters following the game. “I didn’t feel any pressure to get my first triple-double. I’m pretty good at rebounding. So, if I get the minutes, I believe I’ll be able to get another triple-double.”
Pritchard’s career-high points came after he had 31 points and 11 assists in the Celtics’ 131-98 victory over the Charlotte Hornets on Friday.
“Just being a complete player from the standpoint of every game is going to be different,” Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla said after the game. “He influences the game in a variety of ways. Obviously, having a steady role throughout the season is really beneficial.
The 6-foot-1 Pritchard posted a career season after signing a four-year, $30 million contract extension in October. He averaged 9.6 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists while playing 22.3 minutes per game, all career-highs. He shot 46.8% from the floor and 38.5% from the 3-point line, also career-highs.
Pritchard appeared in all 82 games this season, the first time in his four-year career he played in every game. He was the only Celtic to appear in every game this season.
Pritchard and the Celtics are looking for a title. They advanced to the NBA Finals in 2022, but were defeated by the Golden State Warriors in six games. They finished the season with the league’s best record (64-18) and are among the favorites to win the NBA championship.
Pritchard stated that he is willing to do all it takes to help the squad win.
“Ultimately, I’m here to win a championship,” he was quoted as saying. “And whatever’s asked of me, I’ll do that.”
