As we head out tonight, it’s clear Democrats will have a lot to consider about how they move forward. The coalition that propelled Barack Obama to the White House twice has all but collapsed, and voting blocs that Democrats considered certain are no longer. Sure, many will point to major strategic missteps, namely by President Biden. But there are deeper issues the results of this election are laying bare that will require a lot of thought by the party’s leaders.We’ll have days, weeks and months to discuss why Trump is doing so well. But unlike 2016 and 2020, this will not be a major surprise. Trump was, based upon the public data, in a position to win in every swing state in which he is ahead or projected to win.I have to say from basically start to finish this night has been clear. There hasn’t been any weird shifting directions. It’s basically been Trump since we got the first counties in. Very much unlike 2020 when there was whiplash as the vote count went on.With a Republican-controlled Senate, Trump would have dramatic power to reshape the federal judiciary, further cement the rightward shift of the Supreme Court and take executive action on domestic policy while changing how the US engages with the rest of the world. And congressional Republicans will fall in line.
