The Seton Hall University basketball team defeated No. 23-ranked Providence by a final score of 61-57. Dre Davis was key in the win, scoring 17 points and led Seton Hall’s four double-figure scorers. Despite a below-average shooting performance of 36.2 percent from the field, the Pirates (9-5, 2-1 Big East) fought hard and won their second game of the season against a ranked opponent.
On the other hand, the Providence Friars’ defeat on Wednesday night was further compounded by the news of swingman Bryce Hopkins’ injury. Hopkins suffered a ruptured left ACL, which will unfortunately keep him out of action for the rest of the season.
As a result of a ruptured ACL in his left knee, Providence’s standout forward Bryce Hopkins will miss the remainder of the season, the university said on Thursday. Wednesday night’s 61-57 loss against Seton Hall was caused by an injury early in the second half for Hopkins.

Since joining the Friars in the spring of 2022 after transferring from Kentucky, Hopkins, a 6-foot-7 junior, has been the best player for No. 23 Providence. Last season, he led Providence to the NCAA tournament and was named to the first team of the Big East with an average of 15.8 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.
The impact of Hopkins’ absence in the Friars
The Friars, under first-year head coach English, have had a promising start to the season, much to the surprise of many. With Hopkins in the lineup, the team has been averaging 15.5 points and 8.6 rebounds per game this season. However, in the lead-up to their game on Wednesday, Hopkins was absent from the roster due to an undisclosed reason. Despite this, the Friars managed to secure victories against both Wisconsin and Marquette, bringing their current record to 11-2.
The absence of Hopkins will undoubtedly have an impact on the team’s performance going forward. Guards Corey Floyd and Garwey Dual will be expected to take on more responsibility and play a bigger role in the team’s strategy. Additionally, freshman Rich Barron may also be given more playing time to compensate for the void left by Hopkins’ absence.
