Winnipeg Blue Bombers re-sign kicker from Detroit Lions on one-year contract.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have signed American kicker Sergio Castillo to a one-year contract, returning him to the fold after becoming a free agent on February 13.

In 2023, the 33-year-old set a new team record with a 90.2 percent accuracy rate, landing on 46 of 51 field goal attempts and four of six from outside the 50-yard line. He was three-for-five in the Western Final and made his first Grey Cup try, extending his championship game winning streak to six after going five-for-five in the Blue Bombers’ 2021 triumph over Hamilton.

Castillo returned to Winnipeg for the third time in 2023. He joined the CFL in 2015, was traded midway through the 2021 season, and left as a free agency that offseason.

In 77 career CFL games, the West Texas A&M product has gone 170-of-196 on field goals, converting 86.7 percent for the Bombers, Ottawa Redblacks, Hamilton Tiger-Cats, British Columbia Lions, and Edmonton Elks. In 2019, he was selected a CFL all-star, which led to opportunities with the NFL’s New York Jets, the XFL’s Houston Roughnecks, and the Alliance of American Football’s San Antonio Commanders.

The Blue Bombers open the 2024 regular season by hosting the Grey Cup champion Montreal Alouettes at Princess Auto Stadium on Thursday, June 6.
